Why Good Strategy Games Feel Better On A Small Screen

There's a lingering idea that strategy games belong on PC and everything else is a compromise. After a lot of hours on our phones, I don't fully buy it anymore. The best mobile strategy games are built around touch, not ported onto it.

Take unit selection. On a phone, a good game lets you drag a box or tap-and-hold to group troops in a way that's actually faster than fiddling with a mouse. Ironvale Legions does this so well it changed how I think about the genre.

The screen size forces designers to be clear. There's no room for cluttered UI, so the good games strip things down to what matters. That clarity often makes them more approachable than their desktop cousins.

The catch is that lazy ports still exist, and they feel awful. Tiny buttons, cramped menus, and menus buried in menus. My rule of thumb: if the tutorial fights the touchscreen, uninstall.

When a studio actually respects the format, mobile strategy stops being a lesser version of anything. It just becomes strategy you can play on the bus.
